Ginning

Under research programme the following projects are being carried out in R & D Farm by Chief Cotton Breeder Mrs M Asha Rani associated with Cotton Development & Research Officer Mr V Muthusamy.

Project No. 1: Screening of Germplasm collections for tolerance to insect pests, diseases and for other desirable traits.

A total of 435 germplasm collections (G.hirsutum, G.barbadense, G.arboreum and G.herbaseum) were maintained. Out of 435 germplasm, 20 types having good productivity, earliness and tolerance to sucking pests, particularly mealybug were selected.

Project No.2:

  1. Mass pedigree maintenance of promising lines and varieties to restore the yield and quality of MCU-5, MCU-7 and Surabhi.

The following mass pedigree lines were maintained. These plants were inspected for their true types and single plants were selected based on high productivity and pest tolerant. The selected plants will be utilized for seed production purpose.

a.     Evaluation of SIMA Super MCU 5:


  • SIMA Super MCU-5 seeds were distributed to the farmers in Konganapuram, Kumbakonam, Udumalpet, Theni and Rajapalayam areas in the name of MCU-5.
  • SIMA Super MCU-5 seeds were distributed to the farmers in Konganapuram, Kumbakonam, Udumalpet, Theni and Rajapalayam areas in the name of MCU-5.
  • Two progenies were selected and raised during 2014-15 for yield trial. High yielding plants were selected. The selected plants will be studied during winter 2015-16. The details are given below:

Selected lines were found high productivity, ginning outturn and fibre properties than the check of commercial MCU-5.

b.      Evaluation of MCU-7:

One progeny was selected from 187 progenies based on yield of seed cotton and high ginning outturn and raised. Single plants were selected based on high productivity and will be utilized for further studies. The characters are given below:

The selected progeny was found to record high yield, high ginning outturn and all fibre properties than the commercial MCU-7.

c.     Evaluation of Surabhi:

Seed cotton from 220 single plants was collected from the farmers field at Konganapuram. Out of 220 plants, 127 plants were selected based on ginning outturn of 34.0% and above and raised during 2013-14. Of them, 62 single plants were selected based on ginning outturn 35% to 34%, mean halo length of 32 mm to 33 mm and raised during 2014-15 in winter season. Out of them, 50 single plants were selected based on higher yield. The details are given below:

Project No.3:   Restoration of Suvin to its original fibre properties with better yield and optimum crop duration.

Suvin field

Ginning

  • The restoration of Suvin variety to its original characters and also improvement in terms of yield and fibre properties are being continued.
  • The improvements has been achieved with regard to yield, ginning outturn and micronaire value, besides spectacular reduction in crop duration to the tune of 35 days (from 210 days to 175 days) has been noticed. The work on improvement towards fibre strength is being continued.
  • Out of 16 progenies studied, 3 progenies were selected based on reduced duration, kapas yield and fibre properties. The economic characters are given below:

Project No.4: Identification of hi-tech hybrid combinations and Synthesis of new hybrid combinations

Intra-hirsutum hybrid combinations:

Out of 104 intra-hirsutum hybrids, 11 hybrids were raised during 2014-15. Out of 11 hybrids, 7 hybrids were found to be superior in higher yield than the check. Their characters are given below:

Spacing 60 cm x 15 cm and 60 cm x 20 cm having higher yield than the spacing adopted under 45 cm x 15 cm and 45 cm x 20 cm. Variety V-1, V-2, V-3 has recorded higher yield than the check of V-4 (Anjali).

Nomination of Hybrids and cultures for the AICCIP trials:

  1. H x B High tech hybrid: This is Extra Long Staple G.hirsutum X G.barbadense hybrid. Duration is 160-165 days with higher yield and high count cotton developed in 1994-95.

  1. GKS Hybrid: This is a short duration (125-135 days) intra hirsutum long staple non Bt. cotton hybrid. This hybrid was tested in the IET of AICCIP trials during 2006-07. Being the short duration hybrid, this hybrid is not able to compete with other normal and long duration cotton hybrid. However, the hybrid performed well in Lam (AP) centre.

The performance of the culture in different locations in the IET of the AICCIP trials will be known from the today’s workshop.


  1. SHM-55: This is a long staple cotton with duration of 140-150 days. SHM-55 is nominated for testing in IET of the AICCIP trial during Winter 2015-16 at national level. Its performance is given below:
